Volunteer Driving Service
Need a ride? Give us a call! 250-2130

Ensuring that seniors maintain their independence and have access to necessary resources is crucial. Our volunteer driving service for seniors is a community-based initiative designed to provide transportation for older adults. This service not only helps seniors reach their destinations safely but also fosters social connections and enhances their quality of life.

The volunteer driving service is a collaborative effort involving dedicated community members on Mayne Island who offer their time and vehicles to assist seniors with their transportation needs. The service typically operates on Mayne Island and off in the Sidney and Victoria areas Often trips are tailored to meet the unique needs of the senior we serve.

Volunteer driving can include:
– Door-to-Door Service: Volunteers provide door-to-door transportation, ensuring seniors get to and from their destinations comfortably and safely.
– Flexible Scheduling: The service accommodates various schedules, offering rides for medical appointments, grocery shopping, social events, and working with ferry schedules
– Friendly Companionship: Beyond transportation, volunteers offer companionship, which can be a vital source of social interaction for seniors who may otherwise experience isolation.

For Volunteers:
Individuals looking to volunteer to support the volunteer driving program can apply with our Volunteer Coordinator through email (volunteer@mials.org) or by giving us a call. Volunteers are required to undergo background checks for free.

Non-Medical Respite Volunteers:
Non-medical respite volunteer visitors play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for seniors. These volunteers provide invaluable support, not just to the seniors themselves, but also to their caregivers, families, and the community. One of the primary benefits of having a non-medical respite volunteer visitor is the companionship they offer. Many seniors experience loneliness and isolation, especially if they live alone or have limited mobility. Volunteer visitors can provide conversation and companionship as well as social Interaction privately or out in the community.

Our respite volunteers also help providing caregiver relief. Caregivers often face challenges in balancing their responsibilities, which can lead to stress and burnout. Non-medical respite volunteers offer much-needed relief by giving caregivers a break.

Volunteers can encourage individuals to engage in light activities, promoting physical and mental well-being through walks, card and board games, puzzles, coffee visits to town, library visits and more.

While not a substitute for medical care, volunteer visitors can serve as an extra pair of eyes and ears, our volunteers get attuned to the individuals they work with and can notice changes and will bring it to the caregiver’s attention.

Often our volunteers often act as a bridge between seniors and their communities by connecting individuals with resources and events and they work to foster community ties by engaging seniors with their wider community, helping to create a more inclusive and connected Mayne.
