Cruise Director Volunteers – MIALS

Position: Cruise Directors  
Location: Mayne Island, BC  
Type: On-Call, Volunteer  

About the Role:
Mayne Island Assisted Living Society (MIALS) is seeking passionate and reliable volunteers to accompany Mayne Island residents on the Day Tripper bus on Tuesdays for day long outings to Sidney, Victoria and the surrounding areas. This is an on-call volunteer position and requires being at the ferry terminal for 6:30AM and taking the 7:05 am ferry; we return on the 4:30 pm ferry.

Key Responsibilities:

Fare Collection Collect cash fares from riders who have not already paid online and submit cash fares promptly to MIALS after each trip. 
Day Planning  Review requested rider appointments and shopping destinations and organize sequential stops and pick ups, prioritizing medical appointments in consultation with bus drivers.  
Rider Liaison  Meet riders at designated departure points on both Mayne Island and in Sidney and Victoria, ensuring all passengers are on bus before departing each way. We also request that you have a cell phone as riders may need to reach you on the day of the trip; or should you as Cruise Director need to be giving riders information.
BC Ferries toll payment  Report passenger load (divided by seniors and adults) to BC Ferries toll booth and pay toll using MIALS Experience Card. 
Responding to Requests:
Assisting drivers with trip planning, coordination of the day’s stops and other MIALS team members with requested tasks such as a grocery shopping or material pick ups.


The role of Cruise Director is vital in ensuring that the Day Tripper program operates efficiently while maintaining a fun and social environment on the bus. This role also helps ensure community members are able to access important off island resources reliably. The ideal volunteer is reliable, has a cell phone, and enjoys engaging with people from all walks of life.

Requirements:
– Willingness to sign a non-disclosure document
– Ability and willingness to work as a part of a volunteer team
– A caring attitude and desire to help older adults maintain their independence.
– A cell phone
