What is the Day Tripper?

On April 25, MIALS officially launched The Community Bus Pilot Program. In collaboration with the Mayne Island Community Bus we are offering a weekly transportation service into Sidney and Victoria. 

While this initiative originated from our mandate to help aging in place on Mayne Island the service is available for everyone on the island to use.

The intention is to provide a sustainable and secure form a travel that gives islanders affordable access to off-island needs such as: medical and other types of appointments, social outings, and errand days.  

Our agreement with BC Ferries means the bus has been granted guaranteed loading every Tuesday. It means everyone who uses the service can travel stress free knowing they will get to Vancouver Island and back again. We gratefully thank and acknowledge the work BC Ferries did to make this happen.

Full Program Details:

  • The program runs every Tuesday
  • This program is available for everyone to use (medical appointment, meetings, errands, lunch and a movie)
  • The bus departs on the 7:05 a.m. ferry to Swartz Bay and returns on the 4:20 p.m. ferry (with assured loading)
  • Pick up points on Mayne Island:
    Library 6:15am, Top of Terminal 6:25am
  • If you need a ride to the bus/ferry please contact us
  • The bus will make multiple set stops in Sidney (and Victoria as needed), as well as special appointment drop off/pick up. Please view the Generalized Schedule below.
  • The cost for the return ferry & bus ride is $15 for senior/child and $25 for adult. Seniors are 65 years of age or older per BC Ferries policy. Please use the form on this page to book your seat. We can also accept cash or etransfers.
  • Please be prepared to leave us with a contact phone number.
  • There are 22 spaces available each week, available to everyone (RSVP required)
  • To reserve your space – Please use the form on this page to reserve. You can also call or text 250.213.6191 or email info@mials.org – let us know where you would like to be picked up, dropped off and any appointment times you have. All this information helps us create the weekly routes.
  • We need support volunteers every week, please contact if interested and receive free travel.

Please Note

  • Any special request drop off/pick up location must be emailed or phoned in a minimum of 24 hours before.
  • We are limited in the space we have for packages and groceries – if you want to bring a cooler please use a collapsible soft cooler that could fit under your seat.
  • As we are limited in space on the bus, if you intend to bring a walker or wheelchair let us know and bring a fold-able wheelchair or walker.
