About the Role:
Mayne Island Assisted Living Society (MIALS) is seeking compassionate and reliable volunteers to assist aging community members with transportation to off-island medical and social appointments. As a Volunteer Driver, you will play a crucial role in helping older adults maintain their independence and stay connected with vital services. This is an on-call volunteer position, where your commitment to assisting your neighbors will make a significant difference in their lives.
Key Responsibilities:
– Provide safe and reliable transportation for older adults to medical appointments, hospital visits, and social engagements off-island.
– Assist clients with running errands, as needed, while off-island.
– Communicate with MIALS coordinators to receive trip details, including schedules, addresses, and any specific client needs.
– Ensure all trips are recorded and approved by MIALS for insurance coverage before trip occurs.
– Submit mileage details monthly for reimbursement. Confirm mileage details with co-ordinator if any changes happened to original trip request.
– Act as a supportive companion during trips, ensuring clients feel comfortable and cared for.
Requirements:
– Valid BC Driver’s License and proof of insurance.
– Reliable, well-maintained vehicle with a description provided to MIALS for matching with client needs.
– Willingness to undergo a Criminal Record Check (online and no-cost).
– Ability to commit to early morning ferry departures and late afternoon returns, with some flexibility based on client needs.
– Comfortable with an on-call volunteer schedule and the ability to say “Yes” only when available.
– A caring attitude and desire to help older adults maintain their independence.

How to Apply:
To express interest in becoming a Volunteer Driver, please complete our volunteer information package and submit a free online Criminal Record Check. While your check is being processed, our coordinators, Sue and Tracy, will schedule a meeting with you to discuss the role and answer any questions you may have.
Once your application is approved, you will be added to our call list and contacted when a driving opportunity arises. If you are available and agree to the trip, you will receive all necessary details, including time, addresses, and any special instructions.
Note: All driving assignments must be pre-approved and recorded by MIALS to ensure insurance coverage. Driving assignments are requested by the client to MIALS directly, volunteers will receive a driving request by a MIALS coordinator via phone or email.
