MIALS Volunteer Memory Care Training Session
With the Alzhiemer Society of BC and Yukon
Thursday, July 30 2026
Our training session featured a presentation by Carissa McAllister from the Alzheimer’s Society of BC, aimed at volunteers working with people living with dementia. Carissa explained what dementia is, describing its different types and how it affects the brain, leading to changes in memory, communication, and behaviour. She provided strategies for effective communication and responding to behaviours, emphasizing a person-centred approach that validates feelings and connects with the individual’s reality. The presentation also covered the importance of meaningful activities and how to adapt environments to support people with dementia.
Volunteers also shared their experiences and asked questions about learning new activities, supporting caregivers, and accessing resources. Carissa recommended the Alzheimer’s Society website and the Alzheimer’s Store for further information and resources.
