What is the Colour Palette of Joy?

Over the summer, participants of Creative Cafe got inspired (as many often do!) by our island. We started by talking about what makes us joyful here on the island – what brings a smile to our face, what makes us laugh, or how we remember happy moments in our lives.

From those chats we worked to gather a list of quotes from all of the Creative Cafe attendees over several weeks starting in May. In June we visited the Mayne Island Library to gather some inspiration for writing styles, word choices, and imagery. Then finally at the end of July, we reviewed our list together and chose our favourites – what rang true for the group and what represented each one of the individuals that came to Creative Cafe.

We carefully combed through and arranged our selections using the quotes that were written out and cut up so we could freely move them around; then re-arranged before making a final edit into what you see today. We look at it as a freestyle poem of sorts, but perhaps you may see a list or maybe a short story.

The images used are all original artwork created by Creative Cafe participants. They are made from natural elements found on the island with a cyanotype printing process helped heavily by the Mayne Island sunshine – purely made by Mayne!

More About Creative Cafe:

It’s more than just craft time, it’s a creative take on a cafe! We are excited by the vibrant community hub we’ve created and we welcome all community members to join us to express themselves, learn something new, make meaningful connections, and have fun.

Creative Cafe activities are geared towards fostering community connections, inspiring creativity, promoting well-being, and encouraging inclusion. We are a dementia and memory friendly space and welcome carers to use this time as a time of respite or join us for activities.

Interested in joining us one afternoon?

Drop by the Community Centre on Wednesdays at 1PM or feel free to give us a call at 250-213-6191 if you want more information or need a ride.
