Care Receiver & Caregiver Support Groups

Working in tandem with MIHCA to support community aging in health on the island.

MIALS is proud to be supporting Care Receivers through a Care Receiver Support Group at the Mayne Island Community Centre from 1:30PM to 3:00PM on the second and fourth Thursday of each month starting October 24th. Caregivers are welcome to use this time as respite on their own or to attend its sister offering, the Caregiver Support Group; led by Meg Ferris and Nevah Eyton, and supported by the Mayne Island Health Centre Association. These groups are open to anyone on Mayne who is a caregiver or receiver in any capacity to the respective support group.

Join us to explore through peer-led discussion, information sharing, workshop opportunities, and activities designed to reduce stress, learn, and have a dependable care circle of support.

Why Join a Support Group?

Support groups can be incredibly beneficial for individuals for a variety of reasons:

  1. Emotional Support: Joining a support group can help individuals to feel less isolated by connecting them with others who are experiencing similar life changes. This shared understanding can provide emotional comfort and reduce feelings of loneliness.
  2. Shared Experiences: Caregivers and Care Receivers can benefit from sharing stories and experiences with peers who face similar challenges, such as health issues, grief, or adjusting to other life changes. This exchange can provide valuable insights and coping strategies.
  3. Improved Mental Health: Regular participation in support groups has been linked to reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety, as people find a safe space to express their feelings and receive encouragement.
  4. Increased Social Interaction: Support groups offer a regular opportunity for socialization, which is crucial for maintaining cognitive functions and overall well-being as well as a tangible link to community.
  5. Can Provide Access to Referrals to Resources: These groups often provide information on resources such as healthcare, legal advice, and financial planning, helping seniors make informed decisions about their lives.
  6. Sense of Purpose: Being part of a support group can give seniors a sense of belonging and purpose, as they contribute to the group by offering support and advice to others.

Overall, support groups empower idiviudals by fostering a sense of community, enhancing their quality of life, and assisting them in navigating the complexities of their past, current, and future life changes.
